How to turn off Mysterious Blue Double-Arrows Added to Windows Desktop File & Folder Icons

- Copy "empty.ico" file to "C:\ProgramData\empty.ico".
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer.
- Right click on \Explorer and using the dialog menu choose New > Key and name it Shell Icons. Press Enter.
- In the right pane of Shell Icons, right click on an empty area, and click/tap on New and String Value. Name it 179.
- Double click/tap on the 179 String Value to modify it. You should see a blank box called Value data.
- In the Value data box enter (or copy and paste): C:\ProgramData\empty.ico and hit OK when done.
- Restart explorer or log off/on or restart PC.
- If you want to remove shortcut overlay on icons , instead of "179", use "29" for String Value as in the image above.
